LCA captures Division IV crown

Lafayette Christian captured its first state championship behind the play of Greg Williams, who scored 24 points, grabbed five rebounds and made five steals as the Knights stunned No. 1 seed Southern Lab 52-43 in the Division IV state championship game Friday at Burton Coliseum.

Williams scored eight points in the fourth quarter as No. 2 LCA (29-5) pulled away. The score was tied at 37 after three quarters, but Southern Lab (31-7) shot 3 of 12 in the final frame.

Brenden Vessel led the Kittens with 11 points. The loss was the fourth in 19 championship games for Southern Lab.

Division III

Country Day 70

Dunham 41

Romin Williams led the Cajuns to their third state championship in five years, scoring 26 points, including 12 in the first quarter as

Country Day (28-12) assumed the lead for good.

Dunham (27-5) was held to eight points in the first quarter and turned

the ball over 15 times in the first half, falling behind by 17 at halftime.

Jordan Wright led the Tigers with 14 points while Mike Williams added 12.

Division V

#3 Crescent City 69

#1 Jehovah-Jireh 64, OT

The Pioneers (34-5) dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Warriors by eight, to force overtime then scored the first seven points of the extra period to take control.

Byron Joshua, named Most Outstanding Player, scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and four more in overtime to lead Crescent City.

Jehovah-Jireh (33-7) was led by Jacoby Carter, who scored 18. The Warriors made 4 of 14 free-throw attempts after the third quarter.

Crescent City was in the state tournament for the first time.

Class 1A

#4 White Castle 60

#6 Tensas 47

The Bulldogs (27-13) outlasted the Panthers for the sixth championship in program history.

White Castle outscored Tensas 17-4 in the second quarter and never let the Panthers back in the game.

Jatyre Carter earned the game’s Most Outstanding Player award with a 19-point, 17-rebound performance. Lamont Bass led Tensas with 16 points.

Class C

#3 Atlanta 50

#1 Summerfield 49

The Bulldogs (32-7) erased a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to come back and defeat the Rebels (32-5) for their first state championship since 1997.

Atlanta guard Tony Brown earned the game’s Most Outstanding Player honor after tallying 25 points, including the winner, a contested jumper with 1.5 seconds left.

Summerfield had a good look as time expired, but the attempted layup bounced off the rim.
