JENNINGS — Police have arrested a man they say hit an officer with his vehicle during a traffic stop, then fled the scene and hid in an attic.
Dallas James Leger, 27, of Third Street in Jennings was charged with aggravated flight from an officer, hate crimes, aggravated battery and obstruction of justice. A hold was also placed on Leger for three outstanding arrest warrants.
Deputy Chief Danny Semmes said the incident began Monday when an officer tried to stop a vehicle for having no headlights on East Division Street near Louise Street.
“When the officer approached the vehicle, the subject turned the wheel left, striking the officer and fleeing the scene,” Semmes said.
The officer, who was not injured, returned to his unit and pursued the vehicle, with the chase exceeding 100 mph, he said.
The pursuit ended with Leger abandoning the vehicle near a crawfish pond on Riverside Road in Evangeline in Acadia Parish, Semmes said.
On Wednesday, police received a tip that Leger was at his residence on Third Street, but when they arrived it appeared no one was home, he said.
Officers entered the residence and with the aid of a dog found Leger hiding in the attic, Semmes said.
