Time for La. to make its choices

Early voting for the Nov. 21 election begins Saturday at voter registrar offices in Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Calcasieu, Jeff Davis and Vernon parishes. 

Voters can cast ballots 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Saturday, Nov. 14, except Sunday, Nov. 8, and Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Voters older than 65, or handicapped, may request a mail ballot from registrars. Military voters, college students and others who plan to be out of town on election day may also request a mail ballot.

In Calcasieu Parish, voting will be held at the parish courthouse, 1000 Ryan St.; West Calcasieu Business Center, 500A N. Huntington St. in Sulphur; and the Moss Bluff Library, 261 Parish Road.

In Cameron Parish, residents can vote at 148 Smith Circle West Annex, next to the parish courthouse in Cameron.

Voters should bring a driver’s license, a Louisiana special ID or some other generally recognized picture ID.

Statewide the ballot includes runoff elections for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. A runoff is also slated for state House seats in Allen, Beauregard and Calcasieu.

Local ballots include police juror runoffs and tax propositions.

Governor — John Bel Edwards and David Vitter.

Lieutenant governor — Melvin “Kip” Holden and Billy Nungesser.

Attorney general — James “Buddy” Caldwell and Jeff Landry.

Allen

District 32 state representative — incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith.

Kinder wants to rededicate and extend a 10-year, 0.3 percent sales tax, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to public library operations and 90 percent going to sewage system operations. The tax would generate $154,000 annually.

Beauregard

District 32 state representative — incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith.

Sheriff — Jim Jacobsen and incumbent Ricky L. Moses.

Police Jury District 3C — Elvin D. “Doc” Holiday and Dan Lindsey.

Police Jury District 5 — Ronnie Libick and Alex Quebedeaux. 

DeRidder wants to continue a 10-year, 2.75-mill police and fire facilities property tax. The levy would represent a 0.15-mill increase over the 2.6 mills approved by voters in 2005. It would generate $180,995 annually.

Cameron

Clerk of court — Susan Racca and Recia LaBove Warner.

Police Jury District 2 — Dino Hicks and George E. Shove.

Police Jury District 7 — Darryl L. Farque and Pat Sewell.

The Lower Cameron Hospital Service District wants to renew a 10-year, 14-mill operation and maintenance tax. It would generate $1.7 million annually.

Calcasieu

District 32 state representative — incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith.

District 34 state representative — Wilford Dan Carter Sr. and incumbent A.B. Franklin.

Police Jury District 2 — Calvin Collins and Dianna Ross.

Police Jury District 3 — Eddie Earl Lewis Jr. and Shelly Mayo.

Police Jury District 10 — Shalon Latour and incumbent Tony Stelly.

Sulphur residents will vote on measure to allow Sunday alcohol sales starting at noon. The measure would not affect hours for bars and stores that sell alcohol.

Iowa voters are being asked to renew a 10-year, one-cent sales tax for waterworks, street and park improvements. It would generate $554,775 annually.

Iowa also seeks renewal of a separate 10-year, one-cent sales tax for maintenance and construction of streets, sidewalks, street lighting and sewage treatment facilities and administrative and general fund. It would generate $554,775 annually.

Ward 3 Calcasieu Parish Waterworks District 12’s Subdistrict W is seeking a 10-year, 10-mill property tax for maintenance and operation. It would bring in $520,686 annually. 

Jeff Davis

Police Jury District 3 — Marcus O. Peterson and incumbent Milford Reed Jr.

Police Jury District 11 — Butch Lafargue and incumbent Edward “Coach” Cormier.

Vernon

BESE District 4 — Tony Davis and incumbent Mary Johnson Harris.

Police Jury District 2 — Marvin Hilton and Ray Morrison.

Police Jury District 3 — Frank Bonner and David Fox.

Rosepine police chief — Delbert Keel and Randall “Randy” Perry.

Some parish voters will vote on the continuation of a 10-year, 2.75-mill police and fire facilities property tax for the city of DeRidder. The levy would represent a 0.15-mill increase over the 2.6 mills approved by voters in 2005. It would generate $180,995 annually.

Ward 3 Wardwide School District 160 is seeking continuation of a 10-year, 18.77-mill property tax, to provide additional support to public elementary and secondary schools, including operation and maintenance costs. It would generate $241,644 annually.

The Ward 7 Wardwide School District is seeking continuation of a 10-year, 17.42-mill property tax to provide additional support to public elementary and secondary schools, including operation and maintenance costs. It would generate $315,735 annually.
