Keith Evans lost his serve somewhere in the first set but found it just in time to win the men’s singles title of the 1989 Contraband Tennis Tournament at the Lake Charles Racquet Club Sunday.
Evans’ net game gave him a big lead but Howard Herr came back to force a tiebreaker in the second set. An ace gave Evans the break, set and match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
In other championship matches, Courtney Allen won the women’s singles title over Rolake Olagbeqi 6-4, 6-4; Brett Garnett and Ashley Roney won the men’s doubles match over Ricardo Hormann and Ulf Borjeson 6-4, 6-4; and Pat Harrison and Lauren Ingram beat John Wohlberg and Vicky
Chambers in mixed doubles 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Garnet and Roney were the No. 1-ranked doubles team while playing at Southwestern Louisiana a year ago. Hormann and Borjeson played at Southeastern Louisiana.
Boat races
Trending
After the 5-Litre Hydrofoils kicked off Contraband Days APBA races behind the Lake Charles Civic Center Sunday, things went about as expected — for a while.
Three drivers in the SST-45 class proved an axiom of physics — two objects cannot occupy the same spot. Only Robin Thibodeaux, Corky Callahan and Johnny Travis proved that three boats cannot occupy the same lane. The three drivers got together for a swimming meet as all three came close to sending boats to the bottom of Lake Charles in a wild accident.
Thibodeaux, Callahan and Travis led the parade of damaged boats. They were followed by Byron Harris and James Cheatham who flipped his Mod-VP.
None of the drivers involved in accidents suffered any injuries.
