Although the Prien Lake Road location of Novrosky’s Hamburgers, Etc. has long been closed, the restaurant’s all-American menu is still available in the area.

Novrosky’s Sulphur location just south of Interstate 10 on Ruth Street appears to be thriving, judging by a recent trip to the restaurant.

Novrosky’s is the only Louisiana member of a seven-restaurant chain, the rest of which are in East Texas.

As the name suggests, Novrosky’s is a hamburger joint, but with plenty of options.

While the restaurant offers such options such as an avocado burger and a peanut butter bacon burger (which I wish I had worked up the nerve to try), it is also known for its massive baked potatoes.

Dubbing them “The Big Spuds” on the menu is an understatement. They are nearly the size of a youth football.

My sister, Becca, ordered a fried chicken spud, which was loaded with fried chicken tenders and smothered in cream gravy.

After living away from Southwest Louisiana for many years, she had not had the entrée in quite some time, but said it was as good as she remembered.

A large number of healthy items dot the menu — a mahi-mahi sandwich, a grilled salmon sandwich, a black bean burger and a turkey burger. There’s even an Akaushi beef burger, which the restaurant’s website bills as a healthier alternative than even chicken. The website has a section dedicated to Akaushi beef.

Most of the hamburgers are made using all-natural beef from Nolan Ryan’s cattle.

Portions of all the entrées are generous — nearly all of us asked for to-go boxes.

There were six of us eating — my dad ordered a hickory burger, my mom and Aunt Catherine ordered bacon cheddar burgers, Aunt Susan had chicken tenders, Becca had a potato and I ordered a chicken-friend steak.

We also had homemade onion rings and seasoned curly fries. Although both were good, I particularly enjoyed the curly fries.

While there are plenty of options on the menu, don’t leave the restaurant without one of its oversized cookies. I highly recommend the peanut butter cookies.

Although fries and onion rings have to be ordered separately, everything on the menu is reasonably priced. The most expensive item is the $11.99 mahi mahi.
