Crime Roundup: Sulphur man charged with attempted murder

A 30-year-old Sulphur man has been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder after shooting another man during a robbery attempt, authorities said.

Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coats said Ronald Gene Etienne Jr., Carswell Street, was arrested Friday morning.

Etienne was also charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted armed robbery with a firearm and possession with a firearm by a convicted felon.

Coats said officers were dispatched to West Cal-Cam Hospital in reference to a male subject with multiple gunshot wounds at 11:42 p.m. Thursday.

“Officers learned that the victim went to the apartment complex at 140 Cities Service Highway to meet a female,” Coats said. “He was approached by an individual who told him to give him everything and the individual then shot him.”

Coats said a witness transported the victim to the hospital and gave officers information of the suspect and the victim identified Etienne as the shooter.

“The victim was treated at West Cal-Cam Hospital and later transferred to Rapides Medical Center in Alexandria, where he is listed in stable condition,” Coats said. “Friday, detectives located Etienne at his resident. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Swat Team was contacted and with their assistance, Etienne was arrested and taken into custody without incident.”

Lake Charles man charged with possession of child porn

A 32-year-old Lake Charles man has been charged with possession of pornography involving juveniles, state police said.

Sgt. James Anderson said Shannon Ray Smithers, 713 W. Hale St., was arrested Thursday night.

“During questioning, Smithers admitted to investigators that he downloaded illegal child pornography images,” Anderson said. “He (said he) would trade child pornography images with other unknown individuals. Smithers stated that he viewed and traded child pornography images of young females between the ages of 10 and 15 years of old.”

Bond was set at $500,000.

If convicted, Smithers faces up to a $50,000 fine and from 5-20 years in prison.

Lake Charles woman charged with battery

A 44-year-old Lake Charles woman has been charged with aggravated second-degree battery, city police said.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Katrina Marie Simmons, 810 13th St., was arrested late Wednesday night.

“We were dispatched to the 800 block of 13th street in reference to a stabbing,” Kraus said. “Upon arrival, officers observed the victim had non-life threatening injuries but required treatment at a local hospital. Several witnesses pointed out Simmons as the suspect.

“This stabbing was the result of a verbal argument between the victim and suspect that escalated when the suspect allegedly armed herself with a cutting instrument allegedly cut the victim.”

Bond was set at $20,000.

Three charged in armed robbery

Two Lake Charles men and a juvenile are facing charges following an armed robbery on Louisiana Avenue Thursday night, city police said.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said 20-year-old Jason Bryan Leblanc, 2711 Warren St., and 19-year-old Milford Bray Eastwood, 4200 Louisiana Ave., were arrested.

Leblanc was charged with two counts of armed robbery. His bond was set at $350,000. Eastwood was charged with obstruction of justice. His bond was set at $15,000.

“Two victims said they gave a Leblanc a ride,” Kraus said. “Leblanc pulled a firearm and demanded their stuff but the victim driving the vehicle pulled over and confronted Leblanc, who exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

“Witnesses directed officers to an apartment complex and Leblanc was found hiding in a dryer inside an apartment.”

Eastwood and the 15-year-old female were arrested for hiding Leblanc, Kraus said.

Authorities searching for bank robbery suspect

Authorities are looking for a Texas man involved in the armed robbery of the Barksdale Federal Credit Union in DeRidder late last year.

According to a news release from the DeRidder Police Department, Kenneth “Little Kenneth” Woods is wanted in connection with the Dec. 4, 2012, incident.

Woods, of Beaumont, is the fifth person connected to the incident.

Three of the suspects were arrested less than a week after the robbery.

Joseph Sariah, 30, and Larry Williams Jr., 34, both of Beaumont, were arrested Dec. 6. Christopher Kelbinex Eaglin, 32, of DeRidder, was arrested Dec. 7.

Kindal Anderson, 28, of Beaumont, was arrested in January.

Seven DeQuincy residents charged in meth lab bust

Seven DeQuincy residents were arrested Thursday night and charged with creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory.

According to records from the Calcasieu Correctional Center, the suspects are:

Ryan Edward Kennedy, 19, 1505 Holbrook Park Road, DeQuincy — three counts of creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory. Bond: $375,000.

Dalton Kaid Hyatt, 19, 309 N. Perkins St., DeQuincy — three counts of creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory. Bond: $375,000.

Matthew Lee Marsh, 19, 1505 Holbrook Park Road, DeQuincy — three counts of creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory. Bond: $375,000.

Chad Michael Tyler, 25, 313 Holbrook St., DeQuincy — three counts of creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory. Bond: $375,000.

City police conduct DWI checkpoint

City police said a checkpoint on Thursday resulted in two tickets and no DWI arrests.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said the checkpoint, held in the 900 block of School Street, ran from 6-7:30 p.m. and had to be cut short due to inclement weather.

“We checked 125 vehicles, did two field sobriety tests and issued two citations,” Kraus said. “One was for no seat belt and the other was for expired inspection sticker.”
