A 45-year-old Lake Arthur man has been charged with possession of child pornography, state police said.

Troop D spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said Paul Gilbert Broussard II was arrested on Wednesday.

“On Feb. 20, agents with our Bureau of Investigations, as well as U.S. Homeland Security, executed a search warrant at Broussard’s residence,” Anderson said. “The warrant was the result of an Operation Child Watch investigation initiated by State Police detectives involving child pornography being downloaded at the residence.

“After being arrested Broussard admitted to downloading the child pornography.”

If convicted, Broussard faces up to a $50,000 fine and from five to 25 years in prison without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.

Authorities looking for armed robbery suspect

City police are looking for a man who may have been involved in two armed robberies in the past week.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said a man robbed Simple Pleasures at 2024 Kirkman St. on Thursday.

Kraus said the suspect is a dark-complected white male with black hair. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt with white stripes on the sleeves, a blue T-shirt and blue jeans

Kraus said that authorities think he is the man who committed an armed robbery at the Valero at North MLK Highway on Easter Sunday.

Sulphur man charged with burglary, theft

An 18-year-old Sulphur man has been charged with three counts of simple burglary and two counts of theft, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Commander James McGee said William K. Foy, 796 River Bend Lane, was arrested Tuesday morning.

“Deputies were dispatched after receiving a report of a possible vehicle burglary in progress,” McGee said. “When the victim confronted Foy, he fled on foot. Moments later, deputies located and arrested Foy near the victim’s driveway. During further investigation, deputies discovered Foy was in possession of several items stolen from the victim’s vehicle.”

Judge Wilford Carter set his bond at $8,750.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected in connection with eight additional cases in the area.

Detective Sconnie Granger was the lead investigator.

DeRidder woman facing charges after traffic stop

A 23-year-old DeRidder woman is facing charges after letting a drunk 15-year-old drive her vehicle, authorities said.

Beauregard Parish Sheriff Office spokesman Joe Toler said Angelika Coakley-Vargas was arrested Tuesday and charged with allowing an unlicensed person under 17 drive and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Coakley-Vargas’ bond was set at $5,000.

“The 15-year-old male was found driving a vehicle registered to Coakley-Vargas,” Toler said. “He was under the influence and did not have a license.”

The juvenile was charged with DWI, careless operation and several other driving offense.

State police earn best dressed designation

BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana State Police have been named the best dressed state agency in the country.

The honor, which was announced on Friday, comes from the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers & Distributors.

It is the second time the state police have earned the distinction.

NAUMD has represented the uniform and image apparel industries since 1933. The members include manufacturers, designers, producers, and retailers of uniforms, as well as those who produce products and services for the industry at large.

Now in its 36th year, the best dressed award is open to all public safety departments across North America.

“As an agency, it is always nice to receive positive recognition and we are thankful to NAUMD for this award,” said State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson. “The Louisiana State Police has always taken great pride in the uniform that we wear as it represents our commitment to the citizens of Louisiana to whom we serve. The Louisiana Trooper uniform continues to be one of the most recognizable in the country with its color scheme and our state clearly represented through the shape of the badge and patches.”

The Louisiana State Police has worn several uniform variations over its 76-year history. The current uniform was adopted in 1973.

DWI checkpoint set for Saturday

State police will conduct a DWI checkpoint Saturday at an undisclosed location in Calcasieu Parish.

Troop D spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said the checkpoint will be from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

“Our mission will be to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others,” Anderson said. “Motorists are asked to remember to designate a sober driver before traveling to any place where alcohol will be consumed. Drive sober or get pulled over.”

To report an impaired driver, can the state police at *LSP (*577).

Support for this checkpoint is provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Anderson said.
