OPELOUSAS (AP) — The St. Landry Parish School Board will lay off 182 school system employees because of the district’s ongoing financial difficulties.
Interim Superintendent Joseph Cassimere, who recommended the job cuts to the board on Tuesday, said 71 positions will be eliminated by April 30 and another 111 by May 22.
Finance Director Tressa Miller said the short-term effect of the layoffs will be a savings to the school system of about $290,000, and the long-term effect will be a savings of about $6.7 million.
The Advocate reports among the employees who will be laid off by April 30 are 10 licensed practical nurses, 10 custodians and six secretaries. In May, 36 non-tenured teachers who have failed completion of all requirements necessary for certification will be out of a job.
