A visiting lecturer at McNeese State University was struck by a vehicle while crossing Ryan Street at Sale Road on Monday, authorities said.
Sarwar Ahmed of Bangladesh was hit as he crossed Ryan while heading east from the campus, Lake Charles police Sgt. Jay Benoit said.
The driver of the vehicle, Madeline LaBove, whose address was not provided, was making a right-hand turn when she struck Ahmed, Benoit said. She was cited for careless operation, he said.
Ahmed, a Fulbright Scholar, is at McNeese to do research in the business school, said university spokeswoman Renee LeLeux. He was taken to Christus St. Patrick Hospital and released after being treated for minor injuries, Benoit said.
Benoit said that although Ahmed rolled onto the hood of the vehicle and hit the windshield, he was able to stand and speak at the scene of the accident. He reportedly sprained his wrist and cut his head.
McNeese Police Chief Cinnamon Salvador said university police were not called to the scene.
Pedestrian safety has been an ongoing issue at McNeese. Student Rosy Singh was hit by a vehicle while crossing Ryan Street in a crosswalk in September, and freshman Ashlea Richard was killed in October 2010 after being struck while crossing McNeese Street.
Salvador said both drivers and pedestrians should remain vigilant to prevent further accidents.
“They should always, always be very careful and pay close attention,” she said. “And that’s the same thing for drivers in the area, to slow down and be aware that we have a lot of pedestrians around this area.”
